Africa Magic Rebrand

Role: Creative Director, Art Direction, Motion & Design

AM-summary

The re-brand is aimed to celebrate Africa in its diversity, culture, people, nature, and landscape in modern aesthetics. Entertainment Loved by Africa.

Africa Magic is one of the continent's most recognized entertainment brands, serving audiences across Africa through a portfolio of channels rooted in local storytelling. By 2016, the network required a comprehensive rebrand to position it as a fresh, vibrant, and urban platform while remaining deeply connected to its African identity. The challenge was immense in scale: the rebrand had to function across eight distinct channels, each with its own cultural and linguistic identity, while maintaining the strict coherence of a single, unified brand system.

Leading the project as Creative Director and Art Director at Monarchy in Johannesburg, I was responsible for the visual identity, motion system, and overall creative direction across the entire Africa Magic portfolio. The central concept was rooted in Africa's diversity: the belief that the continent's true strength lies in the sum of its parts. I developed distinct identities for each channel (Showcase, Epic, Urban, Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, Family, and World) drawn from specific cultural references. To anchor the system, I designed a new corporate logo constructed from geometrically balanced "AM" initials. The motion language, color systems, and channel imaging were meticulously crafted to feel authentically African while meeting the rigorous standards of a modern, premium broadcast brand.

The rebrand gave Africa Magic a visual language that felt owned rather than borrowed. By grounding each channel’s identity in genuine cultural meaning, from Ghanaian heritage to Igbo and Yoruba traditions, the work resonated with audiences on a level previous iterations had not. The resulting visual system became a benchmark in African broadcast design, with variations of its aesthetic soon appearing across the industry as others sought to capture the same authenticity. It stands as a definitive example of what happens when design moves with culture, rather than merely decorating it from the outside.

Brand System

The Africa Magic brand system is built around one idea: the heartbeat of Africa. The AM logo anchors the entire portfolio, while a shared motion language drawn from African cultural rhythms binds eight distinct channel identities into a single, cohesive system.
